LANG/BAUMANN

Shine #4

Unfinished stainless steel sheet, 2026

Three interlocking stainless steel rings lie across the ground. Although the sculpture is motionless, its perfect circular forms create the impression that it has rolled through the landscape before finally coming to rest, while reflections of the surrounding vegetation ripple and distort across the curved, polished surface, perpetuating the sense of movement as they shift with the viewer’s gaze.

Shine #4 is monumental, abstract and executed in industrial materials – a vocabulary typical of outdoor sculpture. Yet Lang/Baumann deliberately introduce a sense of lightness, with each steel ring containing a narrow opening, as though it could be detached from the others with ease. The piece’s lack of a pedestal or visible fixing suggests that a gust of wind could send the rings rolling further across the park.

The three interlocking rings serve as tributes to the trio who were instrumental in making Szilassy Park what it is today: Lady Hope, her daughter Elisabeth, and the coachman. And in their polished surfaces, they reflect both the artistic legacy of the Triennial and the landscaped grounds that surround them.

Sabina Lang (CH, b. 1972*) and Daniel Baumann (CH, b. 1967*) live and work in Switzerland.
