Memories, Interior Landscapes

The word memories aptly represents the unity, meaning and style of this exhibition. In these final years of the century, our collective memories could lay the foundations for a better future. The artists’ work is based on childhood memories and forgotten dreams brought back to life in their vision of the world. The word memories, a source of work and reflection, is also a meticulous record, an observation, a trace and ashes. It is also an ex-voto, an epitaph and glorification. It is writing and essay, annals and chronicles; it is a way of recounting one’s life. Inner landscapes, because that is what it is all about: our intimacy and our memories, the very construction of the shelter that protects us, these paintings always turned towards their own centre, this panorama suddenly offered and delivered to the surprises of the gaze, as everything here is shaped and constructed in a back-and-forth movement from the inside to the outside, from the whole world to the heart of the world. The choice of a title is not random; it is part of the passage of time, it stimulates artists, it must convince and help the public. Memories, Interior Landscapes is part of an overall reflection on the very genesis of Szilassy’s park, a landscaped park as conceived at the end of the 17th century, which gradually reveals itself and offers, along the way, its expectations and its silences. It is in this movement that the text is written and the book is created, that the sculptures take shape, in a constant return to the past, to diverse and multiple pasts, in a turbulent and stormy present, straining towards a new future.
